Outside the primary ring of the Shattered Reach lie the Far Shards, oblong isles set in two roughly-parallel lines, progressing further and further from the core of the Shattered Reach. The Far Shards are a peripheral zone of the Mandateum, formally under its control but more akin to a lawless frontier. Strategically and economically irrelevant, they are occupied by subsistence farmers, exiles, outlaws, and pirates, many of whom run their own criminal microstates.
In the Far Shards, luminists often practice openly, though only under the protection (and employ) of one of the isles’ would-be kings. They also tend not to live very long.
