Whether by the influences of the moonless or by plain human mistrust, the consumption of pearls and practice of luminism has long been illegal and punishable by death. Almost all luminists carry at least one pearl that can be cracked to alter memories in order to cover their tracks, and luminists try to use their abilities in stealthy ways.
Luminists often operate in small groups called glints. Two glints will often cooperate when they meet, but rarely exchange identifying information, in case either glint is later captured and possessed by a moonless.
